Ball State University, near the scene of the attack.The student claims his attackers singled the group out because of their sexuality. BERKELEY, Calif., May 3 (UPI) -- A University of California-Berkeley student was stabbed to death early Saturday, just a few blocks from campus on frat row, police said.
The victim's name had not been released, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Police said no arrests had been made and it wasn't clear whether the slaying had anything to do with the university's fraternities and sororities that populate the street where the killing took place, the newspaper reported

Two years ago an undergrad at the University of Portland, a private Catholic college, asked a male friend to walk her back to her dorm after a party. He claims they had consensual sex when they got there. She says he raped her.
Some time later, she reported the incident to the campus police, but the university brought no charges against the alleged assailant. When she criticized them and asked why no action had been taken, she received a letter from the university’s judicial coordinator that read as follows:
Based upon my findings in my investigation, I am unable to determine if a sexual assault occurred. I have reason to believe that intercourse occurred, but both parties admit to drinking and therefore, consent—or lack of consent—is difficult to determine. Given these facts, there are possible violations for which you could be charged.

The victim - a 20-year-old college student and the son of a cop - has met with prosecutor Charles Hynes about the April14 attack in a neighborhood with a long history of racial tension. "He's an excellent young man, and I met with him personally to assure him that I would do everything in my power to bring to justice those who humiliated him," Hynes said Wednesday. Daily News columnist Errol Louis revealed details of the troubling attack in Wednesday's editions, citing fears of unrest if arrests are not made soon. Police sources say their investigation has been slowed by the refusal of neighborhood Hasidic residents to cooperate with authorities. "Right now, the Hasidic community is taking a page from the rappers' 'don't snitch' campaign," said a police source. The investigative grand jury can subpoena witnesses and compel them to testify. Andrew Charles, a sophomore at Kingsbridge Community College, was walking along Albany Ave. when a white attacker on a bicycle sprayed him with Mace, police sources said. A GMC Envoy then pulled up, with a second man emerging from the vehicle to smash Charles in the back and arm with a nightstick, police said. An adviser to the Charles family said both the attackers were wearing yarmulkes. Charles was treated at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and released. Earica Flood doesn’t understand why she was attacked and why no one called an ambulance. Her father wants quick action after a fight that left his daughter with serious injuries.
It was somewhere around midnight when Earica Flood and some friends took the dance floor at Cheerleaders on Broadway.
Gigi Barnett reports an incidental brush with another woman escalated into mayhem.
“When a girl said that I bumped into her, I turned around and said, `I’m sorry, excuse me.’” That’s when everything started. She started throwing up signs; they were from the west side,” Flood said.
After almost a week in the hospital, Earica is back home with her parents. She’s recovering from a concussion, broken nose and lacerated liver. The injuries were inflicted by five or six women whose kicks and stomps were partially caught on security cameras.
“My friends said I lost my balance. I slipped and fell. People were kicking me in my side, in my face, pulling my hair out,” Flood said.
Club management says Flood refused medical treatment but she tells Eyewitness News that’s not the case at all.
“I wasn’t really offered anything other than ice and paper towels,” she said.
Earica’s father is glad to have her home but that doesn’t ease his anger.
“I’m still angry. I’m anticipating someone getting caught for this. It can’t happen fast enough,” Earl Flood said.
Doctors are telling Earica to take a month off to fully recover before going back to school, but she’s learned a costly lesson.
“Things do happen even if you don’t provoke anyone. Things can happen. It really is as serious as people say it is out there,” she said.
So far, police have not made an arrest in this case.
Earica must wait a while before learning from her doctors whether she’ll need plastic surgery.

Police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a 20-year-old female student at knifepoint after an evening class at El Camino College this week, officials said today.
After a dance class in the women’s gymnasium Tuesday, the woman walked around a corner to a soda machine on her way to meet her mother in a nearby parking lot, El Camino College Police Chief Steve Port said today. A man approached her at knifepoint near the vending machine, took her behind the women’s gym to an alcove near the locker room, where he sexually assaulted her for 15 to 20 minutes, Port said.
After the assault, the victim called 911 from her cellphone, Port said, and a campus police cadet walking nearby heard her sobbing and went to help her. The victim’s mother, curious about the arrival of emergency vehicles and equipment, left her car and walked over to the area, finding her daughter being attended to by paramedics, Port said.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she stayed overnight, and evidence was gathered and sent to the county crime lab, Port said. As of Wednesday, she was home with her family, officials said.
Port said the area was “fairly well populated” in the evening. He said police hoped the public would provide tips and that a student might have seen something.
“When he grabs her, he’s holding the knife, he has a ski mask on, a hood over the ski mask, all in black dark clothes, a non-police person is still going to see this person and know it’s not Halloween,” Port said

Annie Grossmann, a freshman on the Minneapolis college's hockey team, suffered blurred vision and is thought to have had a concussion from a punch in the eye, but declined medical attention, she said. Through her mother, Grossmann, 18, of Delta Junction, reported the assault to campus security the next morning, and Minneapolis police were notified that afternoon. No arrests have been made. Grossmann said she was in a dorm lobby with a handful of fellow Republicans watching election returns with "a bunch of Democrats around next to me, cheering [Barack] Obama on and rubbing it in our faces." Once it was obvious that Obama was going to win, Grossmann said, she left the building alone shortly after 9:30 p.m. and headed to her room. Under a skyway connecting the two buildings, four women "bigger than I am" came up to her, she said. "One approached me and got in my face and called me racist because I had the pin on. That really ticked me off, but I kind of left it alone because she was so much bigger than I am," said Grossmann. She is 5 feet 2 and weighs 120 pounds, and played boys high school hockey in Alaska. "The girls in the background were just a little bigger than me. They were mocking me from the sidelines. "I didn't say anything. ... This one [bigger] girl grabbed me by the shoulders and was holding me. After about five minutes, I just wanted to get out of there." Grossmann, who is white, said she told the women, who were black, "You guys don't even know me. There's no reason to think I'm racist." Police say the man choked, sexually assaulted and beat the woman before taking off with her school bag and cell phone. She remains hospitalized in stable condition with a concussion and other injuries.Temple police are working with Philadelphia authorities and reviewing security tapes to try to identify the assailant. Temple spokesman Ray Betzner says security guards are being reminded to continue checking student and faculty identification cards at all campus buildings.
